Cherry Capital Cup Kicks up Youth Soccer in Traverse City

Cherry Capital Cup Kicks up Youth Soccer in Traverse City

Written by Emily Jodway

Traverse City, Mich.- Over 200 teams traveled from all across the state of Michigan, and Canada, to compete in the Cherry Capital Cup the weekend of May 18, the annual tournament hosted by Traverse Bay Area Youth Soccer and organized by MTS Events.

The Cherry Capital Cup accommodated 37 divisions of teams with players of all ages, boys and girls, from Recreational, Select, and Premier teams. Split up into groups of four, six, or eight, teams had the opportunity to win among their group in preliminary games and advance to a final game to earn a victory within their division. Games took place at the Keystone Soccer Complex, a 23-field facility, with an additional three fields being used at the nearby Coastguard Soccer Complex.

“Our club enjoys the tournament because there is competition we don’t usually get in usual league play, and we have the majority of the club at one place allowing teams to watch and support each other,” said Mike Lee, Director of Coaching at Rapids FC and frequent Cherry Cup participant. “Our teams always come back from the tournament stronger, having spent good time together on and off the field.”

Each year the Cherry Capital Cup attracts 200+ teams to Traverse City, located in Northern Michigan along the Grand Traverse Bay and adjacent to several beautiful tourist attractions including the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

“It has great facilities, the games always run on time and it’s always a good experience for all the families that attend. It is also a great location for a weekend getaway,” Lee said. “It’s a tournament that can accommodate our entire club.”

The tournament also serves to generate a large, positive influx of local economic activity from the hundreds of players, coaches, volunteers, and spectators that migrate to the area for the weekend’s soccer games. “The tournament brings in so many people to Northern Michigan, helping to boost our economy,” said TBAYS Club Administrator Connie Campbell. “The area we live in provides a fantastic vacation area. Many teams come early or stay over to enjoy the beauty Traverse City has to offer.”

For the club itself, the Cherry Capital Cup serves as a large financial supporter. TBAYS is a nonprofit club, and the tournament draws in plenty of club and team registrations, as well as sponsors, making it their biggest fundraiser of the year.

“We have been working with the TBAYS club for the past three years developing their tournaments in Traverse City. We have a fantastic relationship with the club and it is truly a partnership where we focus on the administration side of their events, and their staff take great pride in getting their facilities in superb shape for us in the build-up to the next event,” said MTS Events Owner Marc Frankland. “I can’t thank the management team at TBAYS enough for their support- Connie, Jason and Jessi are all integral parts of the success of these tournaments.”

This was the second of several tournaments that MTS Events will organize this summer. They will partner with TBAYS again for the Autumn Classic in Traverse City the weekend of September 22. For more information on this and other upcoming tournaments, visit
