Grand Rapids, Mich.- The Midwest United Cup is back and celebrating its tenth year this summer, with the tournament set to be held the weekend of August 18-19, 2018 at several great sites throughout Grand Rapids.

Hosted by Midwest United FC and presented by MTS Events, the annual tournament is expected to draw in over 300 teams from across the Midwest and Canada, as the event continues to be a highly competitive experience and the top-attended preseason tournament in the state.

“The Midwest United Cup is a very important tournament, not only for our club, but the West Michigan soccer community as a whole,” Midwest United FC Executive Director Josh Sheldon said. “We are proud to host one of the top youth soccer tournaments in the Midwest, hosting over 50 clubs and over 300 teams from across the region.”

With the Midwest United Cup also being known as one of the fastest growing tournaments in the Midwest, over 5,000 players and 11,000 spectators, family, and coaches travel to the event each year, generating a local economic impact in the city of Grand Rapids of around 2.8 million dollars.

The downtown Grand Rapids area houses plenty of Western Michigan tourism destinations to entertain teams and families between games, such as the John Ball Zoo, the Meijer Gardens, and beaches of Lake Michigan accessible nearby. “The West Michigan Sports Commission is proud to support the Midwest United Cup.  As one of the largest soccer tournaments in the Midwest, it truly hits on our mission of spurring economic activity in our region,” WMSC president Mike Guswiler said. “Beyond that, this remains one of the most professionally run and competitive tournaments for youth soccer.”

Taking place across scenic venues around the greater Grand Rapids area such as Thornapple Kellogg High School, Brewer Park, Riverfront Park, Aquinas College, and the Port Sheldon Sports Complex, teams will have the opportunity to experience great competition in the preseason among several top teams in the U8 through U19 age groups. Teams already set to be in attendance include TBAYS, Michigan Jaguars, Nationals SC, Midwest United FC, Canton Soccer Club, and Michigan Tigers.

The event provides players with an opportunity to showcase their soccer skills among major teams from over 50 different clubs, including a Showcase segment for U16-18 girls. Showcase games give players the opportunity for great exposure and to display their talent for several Midwest college coaches in attendance. “As a pre-season event, this tournament sets the tone for the fall season, gives teams an early bonding opportunity and provides coaches with insights for player and team development,” said Sheldon.
